Good Afternoon,

Did we fast forward to August? The calendar still shows June, but we have been having exceptionally warm weather since Monday. I am thankful for shade trees and a nice, gentle breeze. The thermometer shows 88º at 12:45. Looking out the window I see pale sunlight, fluffy white clouds in a slightly hazy, soft blue sky. It is a beautiful summer day.

The peas that were planted while it was still winter have done really well. It is a pleasure to pick and shell long, fat pods with approximately 8-10 peas inside. It is a new variety called “Penelope”. This morning, I brought in from the garden 2 large heads of Romaine lettuce, 1 small head of cauliflower and some radishes. Harvesting garden goodies is a joy and so is picking a variety of flowers to arrange a beautiful bouquet.

A week ago, the youth had an enjoyable evening when they sang for a few widows and had a volleyball game afterwards.

The farmers still have hay to make, and a neighbor has a field of long windrows ready to bale.

The events at Mt. Hope include:

  • Ohio Crippled Children’s Fund benefit auction: June 28-29
  • Ohio Mennonite Relief sale: July 12-13
  • 32nd annual Run for Relief: July 13 beginning at 7:30 AM

Here are a few tips I found on a page torn out of an old cookbook that I have no name for:

  • Measuring sticky liquids: Before measuring honey or syrup, oil the cup with cooking oil and rinse with hot water.
  • Tasty Cheese Sandwiches: Toast cheese sandwiches in a frying pan lightly greased with bacon fat for a delightful new flavor.
  • Hurry Up Hamburgers: Poke a hole in the middle of the patties when shaping them. The burger will cook faster and the holes will disappear when done.

June is dairy month. Why not try our A2-A2 milk for a healthy version? Look for our Paint Valley Farms A2 Milk for milk that is easier on your digestive system
