Good afternoon everyone,

This is Columbus Day, and the store is quite busy. It is a cloudy, rainy, cool day. We are grateful for the rain. So far, this fall has been dry.

There is not much going on in the gardens or fields. Outdoor work is slowing down. Our sweet potatoes produced very well, lots of very large potatoes. In trying to figure out what other dishes I could make to find ways to use more of them I found a pumpkin soup recipe that looked good, so I substituted sweet potato for the pumpkin. It turned out to be delicious.

The ladies have resumed their monthly sewing days again. The first one for the season was held on October 9th.

The time of year is here to think about fall house cleaning and get started with sewing projects, etc.

A few events at Mt. Hope include:

  • Special stock cow & feeder calf sale – October 21st
  • Mid-Ohio Swap Meet – October 18th-19th
  • Amish Furniture Auction – October 26th
  • Horse Sale – November 9th

We have a few new cookbooks on our new cookbook shelf. In the “My Flavorite Blends” cookbook I found a recipe using sweet potatoes.

Honey Glazed Sweet Potatoes

2 lbs. Sweet Potatoes

6 tbsp butter, melted

1 tsp fresh lemon juice

3 tbsp honey

Salt & pepper to taste

Cut sweet potatoes into ½ to 3/4-inch squares. Mix all ingredients together. Bake uncovered in 425° oven for 20-30 minutes or until potatoes are soft. Healthy and nutritious!

Have a beautiful fall season,
